The Dormont Historical Society was organized in March 1999 to preserve the history and memorabilia of the borough for its residents, past, present and future to enjoy and appreciate.
We hope to provide the people of Dormont with knowledge of the past and to help them learn more about the Borough of Dormont.
Our History
The original core group of members was a collection of seven people who had grown up in the borough and were proud of having been raised here and wanted to contribute their time and efforts to benefit the community. They met in the living room of Muriel Moreland’s house to lay the groundwork for the organization. Within a year and a half the membership grew to over 180 and today stands at well over 400, a remarkable accomplishment for a borough of less than one square mile. Muriel, who had taught in the local school system for her whole life, went on to become the society’s first president and remained so until stepping down in February 2020.
The Society is incorporated as a non profit 501 (c) (3) organization. After being officially acknowledged by the borough, the Society moved into the former kindergarten and storage rooms on the ground floor of the newly renovated municipal center, the former Hillsdale Elementary School. The Society utilizes these spaces as a museum and meeting room in the operation of its mission.
